The Highland Fling is the oldest traditional dance and was originally performed at the end of a battle as a celebration dance. The dance was performed over targe (a small round shield with a large spike in the middle). Because of the spike on the targe, the dance requires a high level of strength and very precise movements of staying in place. Today, in competitions, dancers are judged on how well they can stay in place throughout the dance even though a targe is not longer used.
