The Sword Dance, or traditionally the Gillie Callum, is said to have two different stories behind it.

  • One story tells that it is to be a victory dance that soldiers would dance over their swords that had just been used in battle with the blood still on them.

  • Another story claims that the sword dance was used before battle as an omen for the soldiers. If the soldier stepped on or kicked the sword, it was said that he would be injured or possibly killed in battle.

Today, the Sword dance has very quick movements over the swords. It is a highly skilled dance that requires more strength, stamina and agility than any other dance.
