Scottish Highland Dancing can be dated back to the 11th Century in Scotland. Originally, the dances were only allowed to be performed by men and were seen as being done to celebrate before and after war.

Highland Dancing was also used to test the stamina and strength of men in the military performed for the kings and chiefs at The Highland Games. Competitive dancing began during the Highland Revival but was still restricted to men only until the 19th century. Women then changed and refined the steps to what we know them as today.
